By obtaining this designation it certifies that our physicians have obtained expertise is the pathophysiology of obesity, surgical and non-surgical management strategies and caring for the whole patient. The American Board of Obesity Medicine is the primary board responsible in ensuring credentials and training is adequate for expertise in obesity medicine. After successfully losing weight, it can be challenging to keep the weight off. In the US there is a valuable database that examines the behaviors of patients who manage to keep the weight off. In order to be in the National Weight Control Registry, patients have had to lose 30 pounds and have maintained that weight loss for at least 1 year. Half of patients used a commercially available program like OPTIFAST.
